Where Does Manuka Honey Come From?

It is one of the native trees of New Zealand. The manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) is the New Zealand version of the tea tree plant. It can be found growing wild in much of the country, but more predominately around coastal areas, with the east cape area of the north island having one of the larger concentrations.

What gives Active Manuka Honey its special antibacterial and antiseptic properties?

All honey contains a level of hydrogen peroxide. However the level can vary widely between different honeys.

Active manuka honey contains an additional antibacterial property, refered to as the 'unique manuka factor (UMF), which can only be found in honey sourced from the Leptospermum plants. To determine if this additional factor is present, and to what extent, the manuka honey undergoes a test for its level of antibacterial activity. If the antibacterial activity is found to be sufficiently high, then it is given a UMF label and a number (eg 10+, 20+) that indicates the strength of antibacterial activity in the honey.

Can active manuka honey be used on animals?

Yes. If you have a pet dog, or a horse, that has received a cut or other type of wound, then using active manuka honey is a great natural alternative treatment.

It is suggested that a sterilsied honey be used, gently rubbing a layer over the affected area, and then placing a bandage or dressing over it. This is particularly important with animals otherwise they are only likely to lick the honey off before it has a chance to work its healing properties. Also you don't want your pet dog to leave a sticky spot on your couch or other part of the house if you do not cover the wound area after adding the honey.
