Much of the academic research that has made manuka honey's healing properties famous has come out of the Honey Research
Unit at New Zealand's Waikato University. The work of Professor Molan and his team identified that some batches of manuka
honey have an additional antibacterial property, which is additional to the hydrogen peroxide found to some extent in all
honeys.
It is important to note, that not all manuka honey contains
these additional healing properties.
You are urged to be aware,
that some companies are playing on the reputation that manuka honey has gained for therapeutic use. They are marketing ordinary
Manuka Honey (which has not been tested and given a 'UMF' rating) in a misleading manner. These companies still make reference
to the research that has been done, to imply that their honey is the same by association, when actually they are only selling
ordinary Manuk Honey which does not have therapeutic uses.
